The birthday Jewellery Box - Huon Pine & Blackbutt
My most recent project was this Huon Pine and Blackbutt jewellery box. This piece is a gift and was inspired by the Jewellery box designed and built by Mark Spagnuolo from the Wood Whisper (link here).
The main case contains five drawers on timber slides, each draw joined with modified box joints. The draw faces are Huon Pine and main structure made from Blackbutt. Each drawer has a different storage solution for jewellery including the top faux drawer.
Each side of the piece opens to reveal hanging storage for necklaces and bracelets. These side cases feature hand cut dovetail joinery and a floating Huon Pine panel that highlights the ‘white bait’ grain pattern of the wood.
Top and bottom panels receive a small chamfer to soften their thickness and the top and sides were hung using solid brass hinges.

This was the first time working with Huon Pine and I fully appreciate the appeal. It is buttery smooth to work with hand tools and has an amazing grain pattern. The Huon slabs were well aged, having been sourced from Tasmania by a friend many years ago and sitting on the timber rack waiting for the perfect project. I’m excited to use it in future projects.
Cheers, Tony.
